AUSTIN, TX- During SXSW, Capital One hosted a series of musical showcases and discussion panels at the venerable Austin blues establishment, Antone’s . The musical line-up for this year (its fifth) was particularly on point with some very big names headlining each of the four evenings (Bishop Briggs, Chvrches, St. Paul & The Broken Bones & Jungle), and some terrific rising and local talent. On the evening featuring St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Austin favorite Taméca Jones graced the stage.
Dressed in flamboyantly seductive, lace fringed all-black ensemble complete with a matching feathery cloak and flat brimmed bowlers hat, Taméca looked like a queen diva. She sounded like one as well.
Her sound, buoyed by her expressively rich vocals, is a polished blend R&B and soul. From full-bodied and forceful to dulcet and emotive, the vocal range she exhibited during her set covered the entire emotional spectrum. My favorite jam that she performed? Her 2017 cut “Good Boy”. I totally dig the vibe on this track, and the three part (I think) harmonies on the chorus just slay.
As if her vocal ability weren’t enough, her performance also shined a light on the kind of charisma she has on stage. Pure magnetism with every longing look into the back of the room or coy mischievousness smirk as she flirt with those dancing in front of her (I think on of the dancers was Austin photographer Cal Quinn) during her tunes. The joy that she exuded on stage really permeated throughout the audience, and served as the perfect appetizer for what was to come later in the evening.
Taméca has quite a home-town following (as was evidenced by the rapturous cheers after her performance), and I’m actually quite jealous that Austin has the right to claim her as its own. While I don’t see any mention of any new music in her social feeds, she will be doing a little mini-tour in May hitting up Tulsa, OK, St. Louis, MO, Newport, KY, Chicago, IL and Decatur, GA. I highly recommend checking her out.
Hey, Taméca! How about you find your way out to Los Angeles for a few gigs? 😉
