AUSTIN, TX- Returning to SXSW always feels like coming home, especially when it includes catching Annabelle Chairlegs. This Austin-based band has carved out a permanent place in my heart with their unique blend of psychedelic rock that is both mesmerizing and invigorating. Each year, they manage to push their creative boundaries, delivering performances that are as unpredictable as they are unforgettable. This year was no exception.
From the moment Lindsey Mackin, our ever-charismatic frontwoman, took the stage, an electric charge filled the air. Her ethereal vocals and captivating presence are the heartbeat of Annabelle Chairlegs, effortlessly drawing the audience into their world. Her ability to oscillate between haunting melodies and raw, gritty power never ceases to amaze. This balance is what makes Annabelle Chairlegs not just a band but an experience.
This year’s set was particularly special as I discovered an interesting crossover with another band I planned on catching at Hotel Vegas: DAIISTAR. It turns out that Nick Cornetti and Derek Strahan from Annabelle Chairlegs also play in DAIISTAR. This revelation added an extra layer of appreciation for their musicianship. Their seamless integration into both bands speaks volumes about their versatility and commitment to their craft. Seeing Lindsey Mackin also contributing her percussion talents to DAIISTAR’s set was a delightful surprise, showcasing her multifaceted talent.
Annabelle Chairlegs delivered a performance that was both familiar and refreshingly new. Their setlist included fan favorites we’ve come to love over the years. Songs like “Axe Me If I Care” and “Tolls (To See Me)” showcased their evolving sound, blending their signature psychedelic vibes with more nuanced, experimental tones. One of the highlights for me was their opener, “Watermelon Summer,” a track that perfectly encapsulates their ability to transport listeners to a different realm. The hypnotic bass lines and dreamy guitar riffs created an immersive soundscape that gets me every time.
In my eyes, the performance I caught only reinforced their enduring appeal. This year, they once again proved why they are a staple of Austin’s vibrant music scene and why I will continue to make it a point to see them every time I visit. I may be preaching to the choir, as I’ve been doing it for the past seven years, but for those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of experiencing Annabelle Chairlegs live or getting acclimated to their repertoire, you’re missing out.
In the ever-changing landscape of music, Annabelle Chairlegs remains a constant source of inspiration and excitement. Here’s to many more years of their captivating performances and innovative soundscapes. Until next time, Austin.
