Anenome's Music Will Hypnotize You With Dulcet Tones and Psychedelic Aesthetics

AUSTIN, TX- When I pressed play on Anenome’s debut album Beat My Distance on Spotify, I found myself immediately vibing to this Montreal-based band’s dreamy, synth rock. Fronted by Chloé Soldevila and filled out with Miles Dupire-Gagnon, Zach Irving, Gabriel Lambert and Samuel Gemme, Anenome’s music hypnotizes you with Chloé’s dulcet vocals and the band’s daydream like aesthetic to instrumentation.

Many publications seem pigeonhole this band’s sound in the psychedelic genre, but I actually feel that the sonic realm that Anemone dabbles in so much more vast than that. Yes, the psychedelia is quite prevalent throughout their album, I definitely also got a few hints of 60’s soul (“On Your Own” and “Memory Lane”) and contemporary pop (“She The One”) in there as well.

When I caught Anemone perform at SXSW, it was an early afternoon set in the Austin Convention Center. Knowing that they had probably had a late night out performing at various other showcases the day before, I was pleasantly surprised with the energy that Chloé and company brought to the room at noon. Like their music, it was a bright performance that was enhanced by Chloé demure yet charming demeanor. I found it particularly cute when she glowed about the free t-shirt was wearing.

There’s a lot of potential with this one. I’d love to hear them take that mellow, psychedelic foundation that they’ve established and really experiment with contemporary dance aesthetics like they did with they 2018 breakout single “Party Theme” which had subtle flavors of disco.
