LOS ANGELES, CA- When I attended the first of 3 residency dates Crook had at The Echo, there were a couple of bands on the roster that I wasn’t familiar with. At least, I thought I wasn’t familiar with them. As soon as the first act took the stage, I immediately recognized the front-woman of the band, Ammo Bankoff.
The last time I saw Ammo perform was some 5 years ago when she performed as Brass Box. Apparently… and this proves how out of the loop I am… she had moved from LA to New York, and started recording music under the name Silent Mass. Lucky for me, this performance at The Echo was part of a 3 date tour in Southern California.
I had always been fond Ammo’s music. As Brass Box, the music was heavy with a dark shoegaze aesthetic. The brooding sonics was perfectly complimented by Ammo’s light and airy vocals which always seemed to sprinkle that extra bit of fairy dust on the listener, causing them to fall into a hypnotic trance. Silent Mass has a similar aesthetic, and it was just great to see and hear Ammo perform again.
In the middle of their set, Ammo addressed the crowd, acknowledging how lovely it was to return to the city that gave her so much, and basked in the fact that there were many familiar faces in the crowd. She stopped short of shedding a tear, and continued to shower the crowd with the sound bath that is Silent Mass, and I- for one- enjoyed it thoroughly.
