LONG BEACH, CA- Having just released their sophomore album “Antisocialites” earlier in the month, I thought Music Tastes Good scoring Alvvays for a main stage, late afternoon set was a really nice get. In fact, it was practically perfect.
As cliched as it may sound, Alvvays’ repertoire was, for me, the perfect soundtrack for a midday set when the sun was just about to start its descent into the west. While their set consisted mostly of songs off their latest effort, all of their trademark emotional and lyrical honesty that their lead singer Molly Rankin sings with was on full display. It’s emotionally charged music, masked in pop sonics, that can get you misty eyed reminiscing about lost loves and failed relationships. And that’s not a bad thing. Not a bad thing at all.
I have both of Alvvays’ albums, and I have to say that “Antisocialities” is an extremely solid album. In fact, from a production point of view, it’s musically more adventurous giving it a fresh new sound, while still maintaining that tender melancholic aura that endeared so many fans to them with their first album. No sophomore slump here.
And Molly and company played the new music to perfection. Their stage demeanor was as relaxed as their sonics, offering the audience a nice little moment of sublime before the more raucous musical offerings that the festival had in store later in the evening.
