AUSTIN, TX- Alphabeat is a six-piece pop band from Denmark- comprised of members Anders SG (vocals), Stine Bramsen (vocals), Anders B (guitar), Rasmus Nagel (keyboard), Anders Reinholdt (bass), and Troels Hansen (drums)- that had string pop hits from 2006 to 2012, selling hundreds of thousands of copies of their music globally. Their music is ear-candy for all those people who yearn for a bit of 80’s nostalgia infused with a catchy danceable beat. Their hit single “Fascination” has that peppy, Katrina & The Waves “Walking On Sunshine” electricity and is a pretty good illustration of the rest of the music in their repertoire. Heck, if Lady Gaga is tapping them to open for her on her stadium tour, you know that they music has to make you feel good. But even amidst an upswing of popularity, after they released their third studio album in 2012 they seemingly abruptly decided to part ways to work on various solo ventures.
It took six years, but the sextet have decided to reform like Voltron, and after signing a new record deal with Atlantic Records, release their latest single, “Shadows”, a song that kicks off with a break beat that leads into Alphabeats gleefully soulful sonics and causes you shimmy along with every pulse.
Alphabeat celebrated with return with their first performance in almost six years at SXSW, featured on Neon Gold Records’ annual showcase, and Blurred Culture was lucky enough to be there.
It was gloriously fun 40 minutes of joy that took the stage during Alphabeat’s set. Dance friendly jams of synthpop goodness, shaped perfectly by the easy going two part harmony of Anders SG and Stine Bramsen, had the crowd at Austin’s Empire Garage bopping along with every line. The onstage chemistry of Anders and Stine was particularly enjoyable to watch, and if I hadn’t known that they had just reunited after a six year break, I never would have known.
If you are looking music that’s just pure fun, you really can’t go wrong with this band. Hopefully, they’ll keep releasing more music and put together a full fledged U.S. tour so that audiences can get reacclimated to their carefree and nostalgic sound.
