SANTA MONICA, CA- Cleveland Ohio has been in the national headlines recently because of the success of Lebron James and the Cavaliers, but I’ll bet you that they’ll soon have another reason to be proud: Alina Baraz. This Cleveland native, who now resides in Los Angeles, is making some serious waves in soul music as of late, gaining a loyal social media following with the release of her surprisingly good EP “Urban Flora”, and surely gained a whole slew of new followers after her performance on the Santa Monica Pier.
For someone who is relatively new to the music scene, I was immediately impressed with the way she handled the pressure of performing in front of over twenty thousand people. Her voice was as smooth and crisp as they are on her album, and she sang her heartfelt lyrics with the kind emotion that made you truly empathize with the various emotions she was espousing. The laid-back vibe of her sonics were a perfect aperitif for the sun, lazily setting into the ocean.
I tried making my way into the crowd, but didn’t get too far because of how crowded it was, but it seemed like every other girl in the audience that I walked by knew all of the words that she was singing. To have that kind of connection with fans so early in the game is truly impressive. There’s something that this young woman’s got, and I have a feeling that as long as she keeps writing songs that connect on that lyric-memorizing level, she’s got a fantastically bright future.
