RECAP: Badass. It’s no wonder why Warpaint, the all girl mood-pop group of four, is a favorite of KCRW … and now mine. I first heard them while I was stuck in traffic listening to KCRW — It was a much different experience listening to them over the radio compared to experiencing them live.
While listening in my car, I was put into an involuntary trance-like state. I almost didn’t know it was happening but I was completely pacified on my hellish commute … and that says a lot for being stuck in LA traffic. I expected to hear more of that vibe when I saw them live…and I did…and so much more.
By the time I arrived at the Long Beach stage their set was already underway. The first thing I noticed were the screens to the sides of the stage projecting close-ups that gave the folks in the back a closer view of the performance. The smoke machines only added to ambiance and mystery of the haunting girl power that was so beautifully synchronized. Each member has their own unassuming style which fit flawlessly together; it was almost as if they were representing everyone without trying to. When experiencing them live, I couldn’t help but move and feel totally aware and completely uninhibited. The inviting energy radiated from the stage. Towards the end of their set they played one of my favorites, “New Song.” Apparently, it’s a crowd favorite too.
Although it’s nearly impossible to fully capture the energy of seeing them live, Warpaint’s newly released album, Hold On, does a pretty damn good job.
