LOS ANGELES, CA- Omaha, Nebraska, natives 311 made their ninth appearance at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas this weekend. Their success was built by their grassroots, homegrown approach, fusing musical styles from hip-hop to reggae and funk to outright hard rock, featuring dual vocals. The band, consisting of Nick Hexum on guitar and vocals, Doug “S.A.” Martinez on vocals and turntables, Tim Mahoney on guitar, Aaron “P-Nut” Wills on bass, and Chad Sexton on drums, has amassed millions of fans and celebrates the spirit of unity through their annual 3-11 day celebrations. With KROQ championing their self-titled record in 1995, 311 would propel through the grunge and post-grunge heap with a refreshingly original sound that continues to resonate with fans, old and new. The band released their most recent record, Full Bloom, last October and have been touring relentlessly, just arriving from Australia. They spoke to us backstage about having the support of KROQ and playing for the fans, as well as their picks for the records you should put on your holiday list.
This is your ninth Acoustic Christmas. What does the support of KROQ mean to you?
Nick Hexum: Plus a bunch of Weenie Roasts!
P-Nut: From the first single, most recent single, almost everything in between, they are our biggest support system.
So after all these years, what songs are you still excited to play? What gets the blood pumping?
Nick Hexum: We know what the songs mean to people, so we’re there to be of service and get people to have a good time. So, you know, we sprinkle in new stuff, but we know people like familiar stuff so it will be a nice variety tonight.
Your music has transcended generations. My 11-year-old is the reason your band is on my Spotify Wrapped playlist this year.
Nick Hexum: Sick!
Band: Good stuff! Tell him thank you!
What new records would you like Santa to deliver to your stockings and ours?
Nick Hexum: [Hit Me Hard and Soft.] I’ll be back here [at the Forum] for Billie Eilish with my daughter, so that’s a big, big deal for us.
P-Nut: She’s dominating the world with those singles. I’d be picking UK Grimm by Sleaford Mods. Album of the year, easy.
S.A.: Mannequin Pussy, that record [I Got Heaven] is dope. Hi Vis, those guys as well [Guided Tour].
Chad Sexton: I’m going to say Nowhere and Dirty Loops. Those two bands are great.
Tim Mahoney: I’ll go with Amyl & The Sniffers. I have not heard their new record yet, but, yeah, you hear me!
