There’s something to be said for a group that’s been doing it so long that they could probably live up on stage and have a blast. Being a long-time fan of De La Soul, but never lucky enough to actually catch a show, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But what I got wasn’t a surprise at all, and that’s actually the best thing in the world.

Who would be surprised, really, that three hip hop icons would still be on point and have a really fucking great time doing it to boot? Clearly veterans Posdnuos, Dave, and Maseo are still on top of their game and so comfortable on stage that it almost feels like we’re privy to a private backstage jam session, with bits and pieces of some of their favorite and most favorite songs flowing effortlessly with lots of joking, laughing, and play directly to the audience. In fact, they were by far the most audience interactive group of the night, shutting everything down for a minute to entreat everyone (press included) to put down the cameras and dance, making people wave their hands in the air, adding lots of call and response … the generation of people addicted to watching concerts through the lens of their iPhones wasn’t cutting it with them, and it was refreshing.

With a nearly 30 year catalogue of tunes, it’s almost a joke to give these guys a set anything less than three hours, but they managed to mix it up and hop from track to track enough to get a good sample of everything throughout the years. Although I will say … this girl needs a full De La show sometime soon, and with the release of and The Anonymous Nobody, hopefully those tours will be coming up soon.
