AUSTIN, TX- A pleasant surprise on riverboat showcase came from the singer-songwriter Truett. I wasn’t familiar with his music prior to boarding the vessel, but as soon as he started into his fifteen minute set, I was instantly hook.
This Atlanta-bred recording artist, performing with a guitar and joined by a drummer on a cajon, punched us with an eye-opening set drenched in solid blues rock with genuine blues attitude. His strong gravelly voice was accompanied by the masterful playing on his guitar which I took particular notice of. It was a performance that made me curious to hear what he sounds like with a full backing band. If his recordings are any indication, I can only imagine how rowdy and excited they could possibly be.
It’s rock and roll that’s infused with soul and muscle, and just raw enough to give it a fresh authentic sound. It’s rock and roll that equal parts blues and alternative, and something that sounds like it can appeal to wide ranging audience.
While he was wearing glasses during his performance, you could tell that even in those 15 minutes he was fully invested in giving the riverboat crowd the best of what he’s got. With every wail he sang and every lick he played, he dug deep into the emotions of each song. Even though he was seated, he put his whole body into the performance, literally willing strength from every fiber of his frame.
His performance of a funked up cover of Eric Clapton’s rendition of “I Shot The Sheriff” (see video below) was particularly revealing as it demonstrated to me that he’s really not limited any single genre. Truett’s got the tools, and with a new EP, “Lies and Lightning”, that’s set to be release in a couple days (April 21st), I have feeling that he’ll be endearing scores of fans to him and his music as he tours the south for the rest of April and May in support of it. If he can leave that kind of impression on me in 15 minutes, I can only imagine how much he’ll impress those who catch a full show from him.
