Trapdoor Social is a Los Angeles based band with global ambitions. Whether they are holding benefit concerts to raise money for underfunded music programs, or incorporating their creed of renewable energy by touring with their own solar-energy generator, the band’s founders, Merritt Graves and Skylar Funk, had great ambitions when they put the wheels in motion to make Sunstock Solar Festival a reality.

The band took the stage as the sun was at its zenith. Quite appropriate given their founders’ involvement in the music festival. And like the bright summer day, their performance was equally so. With songs that have catchy hooks and anthemic qualities, and an undeniable energy on stage, their performance was worthy of a later time slot rather than the midday position.

The excitement of the performance even exceeded the boundaries of the stage. Skylar, with his saxophone in hand, jumped off the stage and walked through the crowd to feed that energy directly into the audience. Though the microphone in Skylar’s sax may not have transmitted his playing through the main stage speakers, I was there next to him as he made his way into the crowd, and those around him were clapping and dancing along with him.
