As much as I was I excited to see Snakehips’ headlining set for Red Bull Sound Select’s 19th concert of “30 Days In LA” at The Wiltern, I was doubly excited to see and hear one of the opening acts for the evening: Tennyson.

I was able to catch this brother and sister duo from Edmonton, Canada last year when they opened for Shura’s “30 Days In LA” performance at The Roxy, and I’ve been longing something bad to see them again live. What blew my mind the first time I saw them was the unrelenting musicality of Tess (drums) and Luke (keys). Mostly instrumental, their music is an otherworldly melding of jazz, funk and soul, and elicited from me the proclamation that these kids were geniuses.

Yup … I said kids. The drummer, Tess? She’s still in high school, and she flew back home the next day to attend classes. And Luke? I’m not sure he’s even legal to drink yet… but that’s all besides the point.

The music they create together is mesmerizing. It hits you with a flurry, and if you’re not expecting it, it could easily knock you off balance. It’s cosmic sounding, almost as if the spirit of Koji Kondo was processed through a looper, spun around a millions times, and splashed on Luke’s fingers while still cooling off.

And they perform such complex music with such ease, smiling throughout their performance, through all of the frenetic arpeggios and the syncopated, off beat percussion. It was as if actually playing was secondary to just having fun performing on such a large stage.

I can’t emphasize how much I love watching and hearing these two play. If you are a musically adventurous soul, I urge you to start following these two. There’s really no limit as to how far they can take their sounds.
