Los Angeles, CA- It always make me happy to see a recording artist make progress with their live performance. I can’t remember when it was, but I first caught SPELLES a little while ago at The Echo … and the quality of her performance at the Hammer Museum for KCRW’s Rebel Rebel summer concert series was head and shoulders above the first time I watched her perform.

I’m going to guess that she’s grown into her music. I have the feeling that the first time I caught her perform live, she was testing out early incarnations of what we heard this evening. Now, about a year later, with her latest single, “Dead In The Water”, getting played by none other than Elton John on his Beats1 “Rocket Hour” show and also getting added to the “Femme Fatale” playlist on Spotify, she’s coming out of her shell and performing with more vigor and gusto.

She was clearly in awe of the size of the crowd she was performing for by acknowledging that it was by far the largest audience she’s ever sung for … But that fact did not seen to impact her nerves one bit, as she cast her own spell on those whose gaze and ears were locked on her as was evidenced by the older woman who stood next to me and stated matter of factly after Spelles had concluded her set with, “I like her. She was pretty good. Don’t you think?” Yup. Spelle’s spell worked.
