Echo Park, CA- “Echo Park Rising is a neighborhood event in it’s 7th year that focuses on the music, creativity, diversity and small businesses of Echo Park. There are multiple stages and activities throughout the weekend located on the main routes of Sunset Blvd, Glendale Blvd, Alvarado Avenue, Echo Park Avenue and beyond.” The joy I get from attending this annual, local musical showcase is twofold: (1) I get to see some local acts that have caught my eye rock for free and (2) I get to take fliers on certain bands to see/hear what they’re all about and hopefully add them to my list of local acts to keep and eye on.

I’m a big fan of Spare Parts for Broken Hearts. I discovered their music earlier this year, and their performance at Echo Park Rising at The Lost Knight for Play Like A Girl marked the third time I’ve seen them this year.

I’ve posted about a pair of their live performances here and here, but at this point I think I’d like to list a big reason why I dig this band so much: Sarah Green.

I personally think that the music they have out there kicks ass- “Ever” has over 30 plays in my iTunes library- but there’s something about watching Ms. Green perform live. There’s an innate intensity to the music they perform, and getting the chance to be up front to watch her sing their repertoire, snarling and growling into the mic is something that gets me riled up everytime. I’ve spoken with Sarah on a couple of occasions, and she’s a genuinely sweet person … so to see her transform on stage just makes the whole experience that much more awesome. It’s like watching someone undergo an Incredible Hulk moment.

She did the same at Echo Park Rising, and I’m sure she’ll give me the same feels the next time I see the band perform live.
