Echo Park, CA- “Echo Park Rising is a neighborhood event in it’s 7th year that focuses on the music, creativity, diversity and small businesses of Echo Park. There are multiple stages and activities throughout the weekend located on the main routes of Sunset Blvd, Glendale Blvd, Alvarado Avenue, Echo Park Avenue and beyond.” The joy I get from attending this annual, local musical showcase is twofold: (1) I get to see some local acts that have caught my eye rock for free and (2) I get to take fliers on certain bands to see/hear what they’re all about and hopefully add them to my list of local acts to keep and eye on.
I walked into The Lost Knight early to catch Spare Parts For Broken Hearts play, and as I walked through the venue’s threshold, I heard some loud, raw, garage rock blaring from opposite side of the dimly lit room.
Thought I only caught the tail end of their set, I liked what I saw/heard. When I asked someone for the name of the band between songs, I heard something, but I had to ask again. Was the band’s name really Sabrina Is Not In This Chat? Yup. Pretty genius name if you ask me.
As I watched this female trio rock-out, I couldn’t help but notice how young they looked. In fact, my first impression of them was that they probably weren’t even drinking age. Based on what little info I could find online, it appears that these girls are still in high school. Three friends, spending a weekend rocking out and letting it all hang out.
[Editor’s Note: The band messaged us on Instagram 9/15/17 and let us know that “indeed none of [them] can drink, but only one of [them] is in high school.”
Olivia DeBonis on vocals and guitar, Siena LaMere on drums and Maddie Calderon on vocals and bass walked the punk/garage rock tightrope, playing with an unbridled and aggressive edge and energy that can only really be found in inspired kids. It gave me some hope that the future or rock is in good hands. Hopefully, these gals can keep it up, develop their sound and write killer songs.
