Long Beach, CA- Nestled between the visceral showmanship of Peaches and the futurist hip-hop stylings of a Dr. Octagon sighting was the low-key, R&B  smoothness of the Los Angeles based- by way of Canada and the Netherlands- group Rhye.

While I’ve always preferred watching a band like this perform in a dimly lit, intimate venue, Michael Milosh and company set a deeply sensual mood with the music they performed on the New Orleans Stage at Music Tastes Good. There were certain instances when ambient noise, whether from a band performing on the main stage of the festival or a helicopter that was flying nearby, momentarily broke the  spell cast by their music, but as true professionals do, they powered through and made sure that everyone in the audience was breathing the same air that they were.

It’s been a while since Rhye has released an album (their debut album “Woman” was released in 2013) but earlier this year they released two new songs (“Please” and “Summer Days”) and subsequently teased on social media that they “have many thing coming up to tell [us] about”, suggesting perhaps that a new album is just around the corner.

Rhye used their appearance at Music Tastes Good to not only wash us over with their smooth sonics, but also to drop some new music on as well (see the second video clip below for a snippet of a song that I think is a new cut). While there were a couple of moments where perhaps the band and Milosh weren’t on the same plane, it was still an impressive performance that gave their fans a taste of the music they can expect in the months to come.
