Orange Goblin Kickstarts The Main Stage Action At Ozzfest Meets Knotfest REVIEW+PHOTOS: ORANGE GOBLIN @ OZZFEST MEETS KNOTFEST 11/4/17
San Bernardino, CA- Having recently announced that they were currently in the process of writing a new album slated for a Spring 2018 release, London’s Orange Goblin graced the Ozzfest Meets Knotfest to remind the folks stateside that they need to keep an eye on what going on in the world of metal across the pond.
Though they had revealed that the record, their first since 2014, will feature a guest appearance by Motohead’s own Phil Cambell, this Metal Hammer Golden Gods nominated band didn’t need any surprises to get the early afternoon crowd head banging to their brand of “stoner rock” riffs.
This is my kind of metal. While they are known as a stoner metal band, I caught flavors of a bunch of different styles in their music. While their songs generally had a slower dark tempo, their shades of punk definitely got my blood pumping while the bass lines thumped in my ears.
Ben Ward – a big man by any measure- played a dual role during the set, performing lead vocals and acting as a hype man, getting the festival’s early arrivals to head bang in the main stage pit. It was a shame that the main stage pit required an additional ticket upgrade, as I could clearly see fans seated in the grassy knolls far away from the stage were clearly head banging Orange Goblin’s heavy sonics.
