Long Beach, CA- Music Tastes Good is perhaps one of the only festivals adventurous enough to lie-up incongruous genres of music in its line-up. From hip-hop, to alt rock, to Cambodian pop, there’s something for everyone at Music Tastes Good. Even country! And if you wanted to give your music festival a broadly appealing country act who would you call upon to take the main stage? Well, the festival had the Old 97’s, and they couldn’t have picked a better band.

The Old 97's at Music Tastes Good 2017 10/1/17. Setlist. With a discography of 11 studio albums that spans over 2 decades, there a good reason why Rhett Miller and company have had such a long career. Classic country themes of the everyman (most having to do with love and heartbreak) imbue their music with a real humanity that can tug on a soul’s heartstrings even if that soul isn’t that inclined to tune in to a country radio station.

Even though they released their newest album, “Graveyard Whistling”, this year (which charted at 82 on the Billboard 200), their Music Tastes Good set was more of a “best of” performance spanning their career rather than an album preview. From their opener “Victoria” to the closer “Timebomb” with crowd favorites “Big Brown Eyes” and “Barrier Reef” nestled in between, fans of this group had plenty to be happy about at Music Tastes Good.

During the middle of their set Rhett, in his good natured way, apologized that Brandi wasn’t with them to sing “Good With God”, but I have a feeling that no one was complaining. I sure wasn’t.
