AUSTIN, TX- The first artist to perform on Jamie Kent’s New Nashville Riverboat Showcase was the singer-songwriter Nellen Dryden. Backed by Jamie Kent‘s band, Nellen set the right mood for an afternoon blissful music, singing her indie roots melodies as the boat drifted slowly down the river.
I found out after the fact that Nellen is originally from New York City, but by the way she sounded, you could have fooled me. Her voice and diction was so naturally “country”, I would have assumed that she was Nashville born and bred. I also found out after the fact that she has been working on music with Jules Belmont (Jamies’s guitarist) for the past few years. Nellen’s latest singled, “Funny Feelings”, has Jules’ fingerprints all over with it as his pedal steel sighs out notes as Nellen sing them out.
Nellen’ opening set on the riverboat, like all of the upper deck performances, was only 30 minutes, but during that short period of time you could tell that Nellen’s voice was sweet, mellifluous and multi-faceted. “Funny Feelings” has a bit of that country flavor, the song in the first video below has a bit of gospel flavor, the song in the second video below has that rhythm and blues flavor … but what ties it all together? Nellen’s voice. And that voice can fit anywhere from NYC to Nashville.
