Los Angeles, CA- The City Of Angels loves its native sons. Miguel Jontel Pimentel a/k/a “Miguel” is one of them. As he took the stage at KCRW and the Annenberg Space for Photography’s “Sound In Focus” concert series, his hometown cheered his return.

“It’s been a while since I’ve played my home town. It feels real good to be back” – Miguel

Embodying the essence of cool wearing black leather jacket, sunglasses and red “rockstar” pants, he approached his tassel laced microphone stand and provided the audience with over an hours worth of his critically acclaimed R&B/funk/hip-hop/rock sonics that have drawn so much praise over the course of his career.

Miguel at KRCW/Annenberg's "Sound In Focus" 7/15/17. Setlist. In my eyes, Miguel is one hell of a performer … A consummate performer. It’s one thing to have a repertoire of music that fans adore, but when an artist is able to perform that music live with the kind of conviction and confidence that Miguel … that’s what separates good from great. His aura on stage has the grittiness of the R&B, the seduction of soul and the unhinged attitude of rock and roll. It is literally the complete package.

With his adoring fans fawning and cheering every note sung, you could sense that Miguel was feeding off of that energy, taking it all in and putting it into his performance. He even took a moment to get metaphysical with the audience, telling the crowd that “energy doesn’t get destroyed, just transferred”, suggesting- then proving- that all the love and energy that he was receiving from his fans was manifesting itself on stage through his performance.

The exchange of love between artist and audience was palpable. We could see it in the eyes of his fan, and you could feel it with every note that Miguel cooed. In a seemingly zen moment of serenity half way through his performance, Miguel spoke about his simple rules of love:

“It’s all about the love. You want love? You’ve got to give it. You want life? You’ve got to live. It’s that simple.”

After singing an extremely passionate rendition of his hit “Coffee”, Miguel recognized that his setlist was perhaps a bit shorter than anticipated. Clearly, he wanted to give his hometown as much as he could subject the venue’s performance time constraints. With a coy look in his eye, Miguel explained the brief interruption. “I”m having a discussion with the band about what we should play. This is an all ages show, you know,” and with that, the band jumped added “Simple Things” to the setlist, before closing the evening out “Face The Sun”.

After it was all said and done, with fans clamoring for more, Miguel looked into the crowd, with his hands clasped together as if in prayer, and simply stated, “I love my city so much, man.”

The City of Angels loves you too, Miguel.
