Long Beach Band Telephone Lovers Rocks Hotel Vegas At SXSW THOUGHTS+PHOTOS: Telephone Lovers @ Hotel Vegas | SXSW 3/17/18
AUSTIN, TX- For most of our SXSW artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. We have over 80 artists to cover, so cut us some slack! 😉 We’ll basically be formatting each post into two parts: (1) Why our contributor wanted to see this act and (2) what our contributor thought of the performance”. Easy peasy. If you want to learn more about the act, make sure you click through to their social media links to get in the know. You won’t be disappointed!
Why I Wanted To See Telephone Lovers: Telephone Lovers weren’t on my radar to start with. Truth be told, I only caught them because they were playing before Annabelle Chairlegs, and I had arrived at Hotel Vegas a early.
What I Thought Of Telephone Lovers’ Performance: I was glad I got to Hotel Vegas early! As soon as this band start playing, I was feeling some serious retro-power pop/rock vibes. I found myself uncontrollably bobbing my head to their music. What made their music irresistible to me was the straight-up rock and roll guitar licks and catchy lyrics. Their jams were all relatively quick with most of their cuts clocking in at around 3 minutes, so as soon as you got into the groove, they were on to the next, which really lent itself to creating a pretty undeniable frenzy for more. And you didn’t have to take my word to believe it… they had a handful of patrons dancing uncontrollably to their tunes.
They released their debut full length in 2016, and earlier this year dropped two single. I like both, but “Two Dollar Baby” has the same kind of energy and drive that I felt when I saw them live at Hotel Vegas.
I found out after the fact when I chatted up their lead singer that they were from Long Beach, CA. My neck of the woods! You can rest assured that I’ll be keeping an eye open for when they play a local gig, as I’m keen to catching them again.
