Joey Dosik’s Beautiful Music Is As Beautiful As His Soul REVIEW+PHOTOS: Joey Dosik @ The Theatre at The Ace Hotel 11/9/16 For Red Bull Sound Select's 30 Days In LA
November is my favorite time of the year. The weather gets cooler, I have an excuse to eat my favorite southern dishes, and Red Bull rolls out a prime opportunity to discover new musicians and on 11/9/16, I got to discover Joey Dosik.
With Joey leading them, the band walked out onto stage in a very comfortable and casual mood. Joey briefly introduced everyone and then burst into song. This lanky, unassuming young man caught me by surprise, and when I say “I did not expect to experience such beauty!” I mean it.
Joey and his band filled with the room with undeniable soul, making it impossible not to groove along with them. Melding various musical styles, Joey revealed a jazzy R&B vibe with his piano playing on “Inside Voice” then revealed gospel and country undertones with the title track of his latest EP “Game Winner” and “Take Mine”.
Joey’s voice is like butter. Smooth and light, I was completely floored by his performance.
I really appreciated the diversity of instruments he incorporated into his live performance because it added a real old-school authenticity to Joey’s artistry. You can tell the whole band was genuinely having a good time because they jammed along unintentionally, demonstrating that they were truly connected to the music that they were playing. The conga drummers especially seemed to be really enjoying themselves.
I think an important moment for a band is the first time they meet a new audience. First impressions are soooo important, because not only does an audience need to like your music but they also need to like the artist. Joey did an excellent job at showing off his personality, interacting with the audience, connecting with the audience in such a way that you couldn’t help but be won over by his intrinsically beautiful soul.
Joey Dosik currently has a residency at the Ace Hotel rooftop every second Wednesday of the month, so be sure you catch him there is you’re digging his sounds as much as I do.
