Jennifer Akerman Is Exploring Her Musical Side The Multi-Talented Artist Talks To Blurred Culture About Her New Musical Project: Final Child
LOS ANGELES, CA- Jennifer Akerman is a woman who wears many hats. In addition to being a model, television personality and blogger, she is also a versatile musician who has performed with several different bands over the years.
Recently, she formed a new band, Final Child, and was kind enough to grace our stage at Madame Siam a few months ago. We caught up with Jennifer after her performance to talk a bit about her new musical endeavor and what we can expect going forward.
First of all, thanks so much for performing for us back in April It was a real solid performance, and got a real great reaction from the crowd. I didn’t realize this about you until after you performed for us, but you were in a few different bands in the past. You sang in Bella Tech and fronted Bloke & Bird, which has some really solid streaming numbers on Spotify. Final Child feels a little more alt than the pop-leaning Bloke & Bird. Is Final Child your new musical home or will you be go back and forth between the two?
Thanks! I’ve always been more rock at heart but my previous Bloke & Bird partner wanted to aim our sound more towards pop. I don’t mind that, but I’m a little allergic to some pop. When everything sounds the same, I don’t really see the point anymore. I got to a place in my life at 27 where I felt like I needed to explore my own musical side and pretty much locked myself in front of my Macbook and just started writing and producing demos. One thing let to another and i realized how satisfying it was. so here i am!
You just release a new single, “Pill On The Tongue”. Was that produced by Teleskopes Pelle Hillstrom? If so, how did you connect with him to work on your music?
Ha! No, he didn’t, but i love Pelle. We met through other Swedish friends here in LA. “Pill On The Tongue i produced and played everything myself. i was considering taking it to someone else to finish the production, but I was like, “Fuck it. I like it. I like the vibe and the moments that are in there.” They’re not perfect, but raw and honest.
What was the inspiration for “Pill On the Tongue”? It’s got a very psychedelic/Lorde type vibe to it? Care to go into the meaning of the song? Seems apparent to me, but I’d love your insight.
I don’t remember if I had any specific inspiration. I think I was just in a good place that day when stepped in to my studio and knew that I wanted to write something fun. Sometimes that magic just happens, which is honestly why I do what I do. But sometimes the spark isn’t there and it can take a while before you write something you like. The story of “Pill On The Tongue” is basically about being in a destructive or quite unemotional relationship, accepting that and just doing the best of it.
Now, I may be totally oblivious, but that was your fiancé Tom singing with you at Madame Siam, right? I honestly didn’t recognize him outside of his “Jesus” role. LOL. What song did you guys sing together, and are you recording music with him?
Ha! Yes, he did sing but unfortunately the mic was a bit messed up so he didn’t really get to sing at all. But, yes, I tend to call my fiancé in to the studio and be like, “Hey! Can you sing these words like this?” Hee does it in one take. But then he gets bored and leaves. LOL. Sometimes, I don’t plan on keeping it but most of the time I really enjoy mixing our voices together. It’s easier to write a good story as well I feel like with a male and female voice.
What else can we expect from Final Child? Are you planning on making a music video? Dropping new music? What’s the 411?
Yes, yes and yes! Honestly music video comes down to budget and I’m trying to spend money on the right things right now. I’ve released a couple videos and got a few more coming. I’m in the studio everyday planning my EP, mixing, figuring out the order of the songs etc. I’m very happy where I’m at with it now and can’t wait to release more music!!
