Jen Awad Teased “Love Is Dead” At Broke L.A. And Slayed THOUGHTS+PHOTOS: JEN AWAD @ REGENT THEATRE | BROKE LA 4/21/18
LOS ANGELES, CA- There were a lot of impressive local acts at Broke L.A., but one that particularly stood out for me was Ms. Jen Awad.
Backed by a 10 piece band, this firecracker of a performer showered The Regent with an powerful performance. I already mentioned this on Instagram, but in my humble opinion, she’s to Sharon Jones what Vintage Trouble was to Charles Bradley. Her fearless take on the soul, blues and rock genres was inspired, and was an extreme pleasure to watch.
She used her time on the Broke L.A. stage to perform some material off her recently released EP “Love Is Dead”. That album is only 14 minutes long and 4 cuts deep, but it offers the listener a solid look into the soul and psyche of Ms. Awad with each song pulling from a different corner of emotion and purpose, wrapped in a deliciously authentic layer of retro-soul.
A track that she performed that isn’t on her EP (and seemingly not available online anywhere … yet), was the terribly entertaining song “Basic Bitch”. As Ms. Awad called out her antagonist as a “basic bitch” on stage, the vitriol and passion she snarled was so intense it was mesmerizing.
There are a lot of singers who can sing soul/blues, but there aren’t many who can pull it off in a way that’s both authentic and enjoyable to watch. I can’t wait to hear more from this singer, and hear what new songs she’s got up her sleeve.
