LUCK, TX- For most of our SXSW and Luck Reunion artist coverage, we’ll keep it relatively short and sweet. Why I Wanted To See Jade Bird: Having caught Jade Bird perform half a set earlier in the week, and thoroughly enjoying it, I made it a point to see her perform again before I left Texas. Since she was slated to perform at Luck Reunion, I decided that that would be the performance I would catch.
When I arrived at Luck Reunion, I was informed that her performance would be held in the Luck Chapel. When I found out that the Chapel had a maximum capacity of less that 100, and that you had to wait in a line for at least half an hour to ensure entrance so that you could catch the act you wanted to, I started to have doubts. After all, I was at the festival to cover acts, and waiting in line would mean that I’d have to forego catching another act that I wanted to check out. After hesitating for a split second, I convinced myself that I should at least treat myself to one Chapel performance, and Jade Bird was it.
What I Thought Of Jade Bird’s Performance: Waiting in line for a little over half an hour to get into the Chapel was absolutely the right decision.
First of all, I want to encourage any future patron of Luck Reunion to see AT LEAST one act perform in that quaint venue. There’s really nothing like it. It could have been the sound system that they had installed into the venue, but listening to an acoustic performance in that room sounded amazingly good. Plus, the intimacy of the performance is really second to none. It was literally like being in a living room and getting treated to some of your favorite music live.
Second, Jade Bird’s performance was simply wonderful. Her smile and her humor stirred life in the room. We could literally feel her excitement as she looked out to us and sang her songs, told her stories and made some jokes. Her excitement was balanced by the warmth of her personality, and … while it’s hard for me to explain the feeling I got … it really felt like we were all her friends and that she was genuinely happy to see us.
She performed a majority of her set solo acoustic, then had her bandmates join her for her final four songs, ending with a rousing cover of Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere”. Her set was 12 songs long which was a pleasant surprise for me as I was only familiar with the 6 songs that she’s made available on Spotify, and she didn’t even play two of the songs that I new! While she’s apparently performed the “new-to-me” songs live before, it was the first time I had heard songs like “Madeline” and “Good At It”, so for me this performance … in this unique setting … on Willie Nelson’s ranch … was like a little musical treasure, and something I won’t soon forget.
