Los Angeles, CA-  Ever since 2014, Smoke Season had been on my radar to catch live. On the final night of Moon Honey’s month long residency at The Echo, I was finally able to catch Gabrielle Wortman and Jason Rosen’s band. Better late than never, and it was worth the wait.

Their brand of electronic rock is both seductive and visceral. Gabrielle’s clear, soprano voice is a perfect fit against the pulsing groove of the band that played behind her, and as she sang her band’s catchy melodies she was able to captivate the audience with her organic energy. Even though she pulled double duty operating the band’s synths, she was able to pull away from her instrument and dance in open space to the beats of the music, giving the audience a visual element to the performance that matched its sonics. Jason Rosen was stoic and steady as he skillfully manned his duties on the guitar, though I would have loved to have seen his physicality match the boundless energy that Gabrielle exhibited.

Smoke Season’s live show was a joy to watch. The excellent stage and lighting production during their set added an extra touch of life to their performance, but even without out it, I’m sure I would have been as equally impressed. The band will be embarking on short west coast tour in September. If you live in or near Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake City, Seattle, or Portland, I suggest you give them a look. I think you’ll dig the view.
