From New Luchadores, To A New Champion And Classy Burlesque, Lucha VaVoom Had It All "Just remember folks, we put up that wall and ALL this amazing shit goes away."
LOS ANGELES, CA –
“I say LUCHA! You say VAVOOM!!! LUCHA!!!!”
“Just remember folks, we put up that wall and ALL this amazing shit goes away.” Possibly the most poignant and perfect words uttered on this night were by guest commentator Andy Richter.
To describe Lucha VaVOOM, one has to go deep into the thesaurus to find that perfect unique word, because perfect and unique are only laymen terms to describe the awesome spectacle and using them over and over is going to get really boring. But leave it to the google machine to find, “sui generis” which means “constituting truly a class alone”. And back to layman’s terms, yeah screw the WWF, Lucha VaVOOM is a double fuck yeah. The formula is simple, four parts Lucha (four matches of wrestling), and I dare you to try to count the VaVOOM because if you’re keeping count, you aren’t paying attention!
First, the VaVOOM opened with Kate Minwegen & Veronica Yune. They are truly incredible aerialists whose high flying action set up the evening perfectly. The act had all the athleticism, breathtaking spectacle and the sexy of the performers that were to come. And seriously how does one remove their bra while doing a split upside down with another person also doing a split on top of them while removing their bra while spinning suspended 20 feet in the air???
The opening matches were new luchadores Sismo and Flying Fox, and they nearly who brought the whole house down when they took on the Sexi Mexis. It was an action-packed start that got the room’s adrelanline pumping. The match had high flying action off the turnbuckles, drama, and abs … oh yeah … abs for days. It constantly amazes me how easy it is to get caught up in the silliness, the costumes, the commentators, and the showboating, all of which is wildly entertaining, but what we came here for was the wrestling and when that- the absolute spectacle- comes out, the perfectly timed stunts astound and leave one gobsmacked.
Now can we talk about Chickens vs Li’l Cholo vs Jaguar Rojo? Because this was insane, loyalties were tested and the Chickens were flying. Li’l Cholo could not be trusted and just when you thought Jaguar Rojo was about to take it all, the referees leaps out of the ring to get in on the action! How did we get two referees? Because one ejected himself from the ring to body slam an escaping wrestler, that’s how! There must be some history there!
The big match was a hard fought battle between defending champ Dama Fina, Mariachi Loco and Magno, and El Bomber/TJP. The stakes of each match kept rising and the battle royal really only proved how much respect that these athletes have for one another. As the belt was passed to the new LVV champion, El Bomber, it was completely evident that victories are earned and sometimes the best way to be a hero is to be a good loser. We were privileged to see such excellent sportsmanship! You really could feel a genuine shift in the energy of the room as the two champions shared that moment.
The super estrella match that closed the night was killer. Dr. Maldad and Barbaro Cavernario vs Flamita and Extreme Tiger brought all the tricks, top rope leaps, and gross-outs that one could ever want from a match! I can’t say that I can get behind the spitting and the collecting of one’s own spit, but I can get behind the primal instincts that were behind it. The all-out brawl was the perfect end to the wrestling of the night, literally leaving everything on the mat.
Before I sign off I have to talk about the burlesque! Super sexy siren Miss Miranda, and her classic take on burlesque was reminiscent of Jessica Rabbit. She cleansed the palette and dropped a few jaws as the red sparkles seemed to drip away from her impeccable curves. Full disclosure. I’ve witnessed a lot of burlesque, some great, some terrible, but I’ve never seen crazy cocktail making with Trixie Little before and, wow, just wow. To the lucky lady that had the gumption to drink the concoction, I hope the liquid libation eased any frustrations of the day.
For filling the ’80s teenaged hot-for-teacher / Weird Science fantasy was sent right to detention with Donna Hood! The LA Roller Girls should be featured at the next Oscars, dressing in gold they were pretty incredible with their skates, performing in perfect sync and also pulling off those lifts with ease! The final performance ended with sultry bath time antics with the divine Michelle L’Amour! She sparkled in the tub and cleansed us all of the dirty thoughts and guilt of having so much fun at an event that was an exercise in indulgence and gluttony of the senses that left us all sweaty.
So get ready, for the next sui generis Los Angeles show is October 23rd at The Mayan Thearter Lucha VaVOOM Presents FIESTA FANTASMA !!!! It’s a spooky-fun ghost party with the world’s greatest Lucha Libre plus Striptease artists!
