Aquilo Bares Their Soul With Every Song They Sing REVIEW+PHOTOS: AQUILO @ SXSW 3/18/17
AUSTIN, TX- For every artist we decided to catch at SXSW, we decided to review each performance with our own version of “Five Ws and One H” answering the questions: 1) Who are they, 2) What kind of music do they play, 3) When did they play, 4) Where are they from, 5) Why did we decide to catch them play and 6), How was their performance.
WHO: Aquilo are Ben Fletcher and Tom Higham.
WHAT: Ambient, synth heavy, dream pop.
WHEN: 3/18/17 at Latitude 30 presented by BBC Music & DIT.
WHERE: Silverdale, Lancashire, England.
WHY: I’m a big supporter of KCRW and their radio programming. I also subscribe to their Youtube channel, and that’s where I “discovered” Aquilo.
When I watched this live performance of “You Won’t Know Where You Stand”, I decided to make sure that I catch them perform live at SXSW.
HOW: Aquilo’s rich electronic sonics was the perfect way to end my SXSW coverage. The music was lush and emotive, and Tom Higham’s lead vocals were spot on. It’s moody music for sure (most of the songs seemed to focus on love lost or love missed), but there’s a weight of beauty that elevates it in such a way that you can’t help but be lifted into a dream like trance.
There’s also a palpable vulnerability in Higham’s voice that will no doubt tug at your heartstrings. With every lyric he sang, it felt as if he was truly singing from a place deep within his own soul, as if he was divulging his innermost feelings and baring his emotional core for whole room to witness.
While there was plenty of chatter happening in the venue by the bar, all those close to the stage were transfixed. We were getting swept into those romantic notions being performed by this very talented group, getting our hearts broken and falling in love, all at the same time.
