Spare Parts for Broken Hearts is a female-fronted band based out of Long Beach, CA. They were scheduled to play at Music Tastes Good last year, but due to modified set times, I missed their set. When I stepped into The Hi Hat to catch a friend’s band play last month, I was pleasantly surprised to see their name on the list of band’s taking the stage.

This trio hit all the right notes with me. A little bit grunge and a little bit progressive rock, Spare Parts’ music made me reminisce about the days when KROQ’s playlist played more Nirvana than Twenty One Pilots and more A Perfect Circle than The Lumineers. Sarah Green handled much of the lead vocals this evening, and her intensely brooding presence, coupled perhaps with her Kurt Cobain cardigan, gave me those potent grunge feels that I  had spent much of my high school days reveling in.

But I hesitate to classify them solely as grunge, because the music that I heard on this evening had soaring hooks which were anthemic in some cases. Demonstrating the ability to write music that has strong melodies and catchy hooks, I am keen on keeping my eye on this band to see, and hear, more of their music going forward.
