Echo Park, CA- “Echo Park Rising is a neighborhood event in it’s 7th year that focuses on the music, creativity, diversity and small businesses of Echo Park. There are multiple stages and activities throughout the weekend located on the main routes of Sunset Blvd, Glendale Blvd, Alvarado Avenue, Echo Park Avenue and beyond.” The joy I get from attending this annual, local musical showcase is twofold: (1) I get to see some local acts that have caught my eye rock for free and (2) I get to take fliers on certain bands to see/hear what they’re all about and hopefully add them to my list of local acts to keep and eye on.

A few months ago, I caught Alyeska open for Ramonda Hammer and Pom Poms at the Echoplex. Fronted by Alaska Reid, the first thing that caught my attention were her laid back, yet attitude filled, vocals. Even when the music swirled aggressively around her, she still had this nonchalant air about her that really gave her band an almost ethereal quality.

Although I could only catch half of Alyeska’s performance at Echo Park Rising, I still came away with the same impression I got from the first time I saw them.  Alaska’s performance gave me those laissez faire “watch me do my thing” vibes, and wearing a sheer blue dress that allowed her black, athletic undergarments to be visible when the backlights pulsed, it felt like she used this showcase to reveal to the audience her natural- both physical and musical- self. I felt it was a solid performance that served it’s purpose as a primer for the uninitiated about band that laid out what they are all about.

After the band had finished up their set, while waiting for the next act to take the stage, I overheard  a pair of young girls talk about the performance, with one of them concluding, “I kinda like her.” Yeah, we do too 😉
