Why I Wanted To See Nikki Lane: I’d seen Nikki Lane in concert twice before Luck Reunion (once opening for Wynona Judd and another time opening for Jamestown Revival, both times in 2014) and I figured it was about dang time to see her perform again, especially after the release of her much heralded 2017 album “Highway Queen”.
What I Thought Of Nikki Lane’s Performance: I absolutely love the way Nikki carries herself on stage. There’s something raw and earthy about her stage presence; almost a little casual with just enough grit and spice to give it an outlaw flavor.
With the space under the stage tent packed and overflowing, Nikki and her band jammed through a set that was filled equally with tracks from her most recent album and her 2014 album “All Or Nothing”. I’ve always sensed the air confidence that Nikki carried on stage, but dressed in a skin tight, snake-skinned patterned jump suit, wearing a cowboy had with a pinched front, she looked the part of a fearless band leader. As she led her band though a variety of musical styles, shifting subtly through different genres, she maintained her authentic roots sound and had the tipsy girls in front spilling their drinks as they raised their cups in the air with every cheer.
The music sounded amazing and the performance was terribly fun, but what made this performance particularly enjoyable was the party atmosphere that Nikki was able to instill throughout her performance. In addition to having the adorable and amazingly talented Ansley Oakley (who I believe has been touring with her for a while) sing backup on a couple of songs, she invited her friends singer/songwriter Ruby Boots and actress Jaime King (who I had no idea could actually sing!) join her for a few numbers as well. Surrounded by friends, booze and good music, all under a relatively small tent, it felt like a party in a living room that, in and of itself, made spending time with Nikki at Luck Reunion absolutely worth it.
