A Night Rocking The Casbah In San Diego An Evening With Rooney, Mating Ritual and Sights and Sages
SAND DIEGO, CA- I quickly finished my energy drink as I stood in line for the sold out Rooney show at the Casbah in San Diego, California. As I entered the venue, I was greeted by the members of Sights and Sages, the local opening band who had invited me to the show. I mingled with them for a bit, then navigated my way through the already packed place to the bar. As I waited for my drink, all I could hear was the sound of Sights and Sages tuning their instruments and all I could feel was the electrifying pulse of a good night to come.
Sight and Sages is one of my favorite San Diego bands. Their sound is different than a lot of rock groups that are coming up right now. They use a trumpet and saxophone in their music, something I don’t shoot often but really love. Going to a Sights and Sages show is like going to meet the Gods of Sound. They know exactly what they are doing and know exactly how to make you feel. The next time you go to one of their concerts , my advice is to close your eyes and allow them guide through a journey into sound.
I had never heard of Mating Ritual before but after that night I know I won’t forget them. They were super dancey and engaged with the audience really well. I could tell they really connected with their fans. I only wish I was standing at a different spot, one of the members had his back to me the entire time and I couldn’t as many good photos as I wanted.
I remember Rooney from my high school Hot Topic days. They were one of staples of the pop-punk scene at that time and I was really excited to see them. I love a good light show and theirs was on point. The different colors elevated each song and, along with the pure look of joy on the lead singer’s face, made their set every bit enjoyable as high school Ricky would have hoped.
