HOLLYWOOD, CA- I don’t often embark on a 50 minute commute to catch a relatively new band, but there was something infectious about 222’s new single, “I”m Not Trying To Be You”, that compelled me to make the trek … on a weekday no less.
222’s core members are Jade Howard and Dennis Hamlin. They formed in 2014, and by 2015 made some waves when Rodney Bingenheimer played their song “Bedtime” on KROQ’s “Rodney on the Roq”. Clearly, their music appeals to the discerning ear. Having just released their sophomore album February 22, 2017, this show served as their album release party, and it was pretty damn good one at that.
Dennis and Jade front the band with a confidence and swagger that befits a rock band. With their painted faces, torn leggings (by Jade) and ostentatious jacket (by Dennis), the band definitely looked the part, and they backed up that rock and roll look with a kick ass set that had heads bouncing and feet shuffling to the beat.
Jade made mention sometime mid-set that she was suffering a little vocally, joking that she was instructed not to talk in between songs in order to save her voice. Honestly, if she hadn’t had mentioned it, I don’t think that anyone would have noticed. The duo wailed, cooed, and belted their melodies over the lush alternative sonics that they a played, with the assists from Tosha Jones (on drums) and Jules Tolentino (on bass).
If your looking for new band check out, I’d keep an eye on this one. I still have to sit down and listen to their new album in its entirety (which I purchased after their set because I was so impressed with them), but if it’s anything like their live show, I’m pretty sure I won’t be disappointed.
