LOS ANGELES, CA- Back in 2006, the Swedish band Peter Bjorn and John released their single “Young Folks”. With its universally identifiable whistling and its infectious rhythmic drive, the song hit the top of multiple top 40 charts around the world. Covering such a recognizable song like “Young Folks” and making that recording something distinctly “you” would be a tall task for 99% of recording artists. It looks like we may have found part of the 1%.

Adam Winn (drummer for the indie rock band Swimm) and his wife, Syd, started a musical project called Winn Winn and recently released their rendition of “Young Folks”, and we’re loving what we’re hearing.

Produced by Adam’s band Swimm, their recording of “Young Folks” slows the original recording’s tempo down, and its sonics utilizes layered synths to drench the song in a plush warmth that permeates throughout the song’s 4:07 run time. Even without the ubiquitous whistle intro, the song’s mood is immediately established and draws you in.

Both Adam and Syd share vocal duties, however, they flip a couple of the male and female verses with Syd’s vocals featured on a Peter Moren verse, and Adam singing a verse originally sung by Victoria Bergsman. It’s a subtle creative difference that I feel gives the song a distinctly different effect as the original version of the song has the male voice starting the song wondering aloud to his girlfriend whether she still would have accepted him despite his past.

Of the song, Adam told Blurred Culture:

‘My wife and I started recording music in our garage at the beginning of the pandemic. Since then we’ve finished a bunch of songs, one of which is this cover of Young Folks. This song will always be special to us because of the memory of our one-year-old dancing around the garage singing along while we were recording, which you will hear when listening.”

Winn Winn let us know that they plan on releasing two EP’s of original music in 2022, one EP produced by Spencer of the Sego and the other EP produced by Chris Null. We’re looking forward to what this couple has up their sleeves.
