LOS ANGELES, CA- I could find too much information about Monique Hawkins and the NRA other than what has been posted on their instagram page (only 13 posts as of 4/25/23), so there wasn’t much in the ether to draw from. I couldn’t even find links to their music.
That being said, I kind felt that Monique Hawkins has a similar energy and raw talent to that of Shamir, blending genres and bending expectations swathed in a punk gloss. Like Shamir, Monique Hawkins in unafraid to be vulnerable on stage. Through their lyrics they seem to explore personal experiences in their music, resulting in a refreshing honesty, couched in loud, sometimes messy, guitar licks, that really resonated with me. While still in the early stages of their career, I think Monique Hawkins shows a lot of promise and potential, much like Shamir did when they first burst onto the scene.
