LOS ANGELES, CA- When a peer was recently asked me what I thought about Two Feet’s music, “Downtempo, eclectic, atmospheric music” is what came to my mind. Two Feet is the brainchild of Zachary William Dess. A native of NYC, he has released 3 EPs under the Two Feet Moniker, the lest being A 20 Something Fuck (Part 1), which was released in 2018 Republic Records.
20 Something is, musically, a heavy album. It’s bluesy inflections and deep bass lines really compliment Dess’ breathy vocals singing on dark emotional themes. It makes for a listen where you’d just want to sit back and zone out for a few minutes. It’s actually quite the opposite of what Brandon Urie and Panic! At The Disco sounds like; the act that he was opening for at The Forum.
The artistic pairing and Dess’ somewhat recent troubles with depression intrigued me. The news about his troubles really gave me a new perspective about his music, especially his hit song “I Feel Like I’m Drowning”, and having had to cancel a handful of festival dates towards the end of last year, I kept my fingers crossed that his performance would filled with vim and vigor, and renewed sense of purpose.
The performance was heavy and moody, but also had a real sense of urgency. The stage production swirled thick beams of purple and blue lights around Dess, and the crowd got hypnotized into a mellow mood through and through with a full sensory experience.
As the brooding electronic beats propelled each song, I could see- even from a distance- Dess get lost in his playing and the music. Dess seemed to take great joy in fingering licks on his guitar, and I even saw him smiling a few times and he shred away.
