AUSTIN, TX- During SXSW, Capital One hosted a series of musical showcases and discussion panels at the venerable Austin blues establishment, Antone’s . The musical line-up for this year (its fifth) was particularly on point with some very big names headlining each of the four evenings (Bishop Briggs, Chvrches, St. Paul & The Broken Bones & Jungle), and some terrific rising and local talent. One Monday, March 11th, a bevy of local talent converged to form an Austin “supergroup” to kick off the evening’s musical fare.
Billed as “512 Coalition” (512 being Austin’s area code), Zach Morgan (the Austin musician who spearheaded the artistic collaboration), said in a CBS Austin interview that he was asked to “put on an Austin sampler of what’s going on in the town right now”. He thought it was a great idea in that it would be a cool way to showcase a lot of different musicians with one act.
In one 50 minute set, 5 different acts performed five different styles of music and really shone a light on the musical diversity that the city of Austin has to offer.
There was the indie pop/electronic sounds of SWELLS, the psychedelic soul of Kalu and The Electric Joint, the R&B styling of Tje Austin, the fiddle-led indie pop of Ruby Jane and the groove rock of Mamafesta. Each featured artist performed a couple songs, giving the audience a musical baptism of sorts. It was fast paced and it was fun, but most importantly it was eye-opening.
