LOS ANGELES, CA- In a world where music often skirts around uncomfortable truths, Softcult stands as a beacon of fearless expression and potent social commentary. The Echoplex was the battleground on a recent evening, upgraded from The Echo due to a quick sell-out—a testament to the fervent following Softcult has cultivated since I first saw them electrify the stage at SXSW in 2023. That initial encounter left an indelible mark, and it’s been gratifying to watch this dynamic band rise. Their recent performance at the Echoplex confirmed what I’ve known all along: Softcult is not just a band; they’re a movement.
Opening for Softcult was Present, another formidable act led by a powerhouse female vocalist. Present set the tone for the night with a riveting performance that showcased their musical prowess and lyrical depth. Their set was a perfect precursor, each song a testament to the strength and resilience of women in rock. Present’s ability to captivate the audience was undeniable, leaving a lasting impression that will undoubtedly grow their fanbase. I personally haven’t been able to find out much about them, but I’ll be following their socials to do just that.

The rage in her voice came to a crescendo with her shouting, “We should be allowed to walk where the fuck we want to walk!” Chills. Down everyone’s spine. These words resonated deeply with the crowd, a diverse mix of fans united by their shared belief in the power of music to inspire change.
Throughout Softcult’s set, it was clear that their appeal lies not just in their musical talent but in their authenticity. They speak from the heart, their lyrics a direct reflection of their lived experiences and convictions.
