ECHO PARK, CA- As the year winds down, I take stock of all of the shows that I’ve attended and organize the notes and photos that I’ve taken from each outing. I go to a lot of shows… perhaps too many… and there will be times when I neglect posting thoughts and galleries on acts that I’ve caught because they may not have been the act that I was tasked to report on and I simply didn’t have enough time at that moment. Well… now that I have a bit of time, I get to remedy that problem.
Opening for Nick Hakim back in October was the Brooklyn based indie rocker Sam Evian (nee Sam Owens). His band Celestial Shore made Stereogum’s “Best New Band Class of ’13”), but he does plenty of recording as solo artist. His music can be described as “dreamy pop rock” with hints of psychedlia.
His performance at the Echoplex was equally chill and laid back. It almost had an impromptu air about, casual in all respects. At one point, Sam invited a local guitarist to the stage- a female player whose name escapes me (but if you happen to recognize her in the photos below, please let us know so we can add into the post)- and she look lead on the electric guitar as Sam stepped aside to admire her playing. Sam even got the evening’s headliner to join him on stage for a number.
For Sam Evian at The Echoplex, it felt more like an intimate jam session with close friends, and that perfectly suited the sonics that he was giving the audience that evening.
