AUSTIN, TX- Neptune’s Core, a youthful ensemble from Chicago, continues to redefine the indie rock landscape with a sound so sophisticated that it belies their young age. The band, consisting of two sets of sisters—Sofie and Hannah Richter, alongside Jackie and Kaitlin Cywinski—merges ’90s rock influences with a modern, vibrant edge, creating music that resonates deeply across a broad audience.
Experiencing Neptune’s Core live at SXSW was nothing short of revelatory. Even though I arrived a few songs late, the maturity and depth of their performance were immediately apparent, leaving a lasting impression of a band that not only plays their music but lives it fully. Their ability to convey such raw, unfiltered emotion onstage is truly remarkable for their age.
The band’s latest EP, “Called Upon,” is a showcase of their growing artistic maturity. Each track on the EP serves as a testament to their evolving musical journey, blending emotional depth with intricate musical compositions. The lyrics of Neptune’s Core are particularly striking, as they delve into complex emotional landscapes with a sophistication uncommon in contemporary rock music. This combination of heartfelt lyrics and complex arrangements speaks volumes about their wide-ranging musical influences, from jazz and classical to punk and new wave. Their latest singles, “Box” and “Anyway,” are killer tracks… particularly “Box,” which is a slow burn that crescendoes into some fuzzy electric goodness.
As they continue to perform and release new music, I really hope that Neptune’s Core quickly climbs the ranks on critics’ lists of must-watch bands. With the right guidance and encouragement, I feel confident that they can set the stage for long-term success. In my opinion, their remarkable talent and the compelling narratives within their music suggest that Neptune’s Core is not just a fleeting presence in the rock world—they are here to stay, ready to leave a significant mark. And with their oldest member being only 18 years of age, it’s only a matter of time.
