LOS ANGELES, CA-  Now this is what I’m talking about when I talk about the evolution and development of an artist.

“I Won’t Cry” is not the Remi Wolf I expected to hear. Wolf’s music has so often arrived bursting with energy, color and personality, the kind of elastic pop that seems to bounce from one idea to the next. I honestly can’t remember hearing her lean this completely into a ballad before, and certainly not one that eventually swells into something this big. But that unexpectedness is precisely what makes “I Won’t Cry” hit so hard.

This is a power ballad in the truest sense. It gives Wolf room to reveal just how formidable her voice can be, particularly as the song builds and she begins belting the hook. But the power isn’t simply in the size of her vocal. What impressed me more is how much vulnerability she allows into the performance. There is a desperation in the way she sings these words that makes the song feel less like an exercise in showing off another side of her voice and more like we are hearing another side of her as a person.

The lyrics only deepen that feeling. The title initially suggests resolve: she won’t cry, she won’t bite, she won’t sting. Yet almost everything that follows betrays that promise. She is blacking out in a bar, waking up in the “wretched dawn,” unable to move on and still hoping this person might change their mind. Even the song’s central metaphor is painfully vulnerable. She imagines herself as a record that can be pulled from the shelf, dusted off and played again, willing to accept even “selfish love” if it means being wanted back.

That is where “I Won’t Cry” becomes something more than a really good vocal performance. These are the kinds of songs that can endear an artist to an audience because they allow listeners to feel something with them. There is no attempt to make heartbreak look cool here. By the time Wolf reaches the repeated plea at the song’s emotional peak, all of the bravado has disappeared. What remains is that painfully human desire to understand why someone you still want no longer wants you.

And Wolf absolutely sells it.

At this juncture, I think “I Won’t Cry” may be my favorite power ballad of the year. I wasn’t expecting to say that about a Remi Wolf song, and perhaps that’s the greatest compliment I can give it. Artistic growth isn’t always about abandoning what made an artist distinctive. Sometimes it’s about discovering that there were rooms inside their artistry we simply hadn’t been invited into yet. With “I Won’t Cry,” Wolf opens one of those doors, and what she reveals on the other side is powerful, vulnerable and genuinely moving.
