Dana Point, CA- The artist to perform right before Eddie Vedder‘s day two headlining set at The Ohana Fest was deeply introspective troubadour Ray LaMontagne. As the sun slowly set to rest it’s head in the Pacific Ocean, LaMontagne’s soothingly raspy voice and acoustic accompaniment filled the night sky with a melodies fit for lovers and intellectuals.
Ray LaMontagne is currently on the road for his “Just Passing Through” tour. For his 2016 album “Ourobboros”, LaMontagne beefed up his typically “natural” sound, utilizing more psychedelic elements (which was likely the producer’s- Jim James- influence). But for this performance, armed with just his acoustic guitar and accompanied by Wilco bassist John Stirratt, LaMontagne played a set that returned to his sonic roots; the sound that endeared fans on day one. He played many of his popular songs, including his ubiquitous “Trouble”, and event debuted a new song titled “Burns Like A Flame” (see below).
As I walked about and scanned the audience, I noted two types of listener: those that were patiently passing the time and those that were fully engaged whether in love or in thought. LaMontagne’s acoustic performance was very low-key. It was the equivalent of a gentle kiss on the forehead as a hand tenderly combs through your hair. Oh to have had a loved one to embrace during that set. Truth be told, that would have made his sublime performance all the more perfect for me.
