LOS ANGELES, CA- Rainbow Kitten Surprise have always lived somewhere between catharsis and celebration, but on their new single “Dang,” the genre-bending crew tap into a particularly bright vein of sonic joy. It’s a radiant, guitar-led anthem that practically demands to be shouted from the windows of a car with your best friends in tow.

Anchored by Ela Melo’s dynamic vocal presence, “Dang” crackles with the sound of a band fully dialed into themselves. There’s a looseness here, a freedom that feels earned. It’s not just the infectious hook or the playful cadence of lines like “Woof, woof, woof, and you’re barking up my tree, babe”… it’s the way the track swells with optimism even as it hints at personal struggle.

“I’ve been working on a project, it’s called you,” Melo sings in the chorus, and the delivery lands like a wink and a wound all at once. Whether “you” is a person, a version of self, or something more metaphysical, the lyric feels autobiographical in a way that adds a layer of vulnerability to the track’s exuberance. There’s something healing in that contrast, like dancing through a moment that once hurt.

Visually, the band doubles down on the mood. The music video for “Dang,” inspired by Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, follows a queer couple on a DIY-style odyssey across East Nashville in search of a secret rooftop concert. They flirt, perform karaoke, laugh, and chase down a moment of musical magic, and when they find it, the payoff is every bit as satisfying as the buildup. It’s a celebration of love and music and queerness, all wrapped in a gorgeously lit indie film aesthetic.

Produced by Jay Joyce, the song itself folds back into some of the earlier DNA of RKS: punchy riffs, singalong-ready refrains, and that undeniable feeling that something sacred is happening just under the surface. It’s a welcome jolt of joy in a discography known for wrestling with heavy themes, and a reminder of just how versatile this band can be.

“Dang” comes in the middle of Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s Thanks For Coming tour, which includes a series of sold-out amphitheaters and a fourth return to Red Rocks. And if this single is any indication of what’s next, fans are in for a celebratory stretch, one where the band sounds not just confident, but reborn.

Whether you’re new to the RKS universe or a longtime follower, “Dang” feels like a perfect entry point: vibrant, surprising, and completely alive.
