ECHO PARK, CA- On December 2nd, 2017, the band HUNNY held their second annual “Winter Talent Show” at The Echoplex. With 7 diverse acts in the line-up, we knew it would be a good one. The penultimate band of the evening was the Massachusetts bred, now L.A. based, band Potty Mouth.
Their 2013 debut album, “Hell Bent”, was a solid album. Fronted by the snarling vocals of Abby Weems, that lo-fi album eared the band a lot of riot grrrl cred. Since then, they moved to Los Angeles earlier this year, released an EP in 2015, dipped their feet into the podcast world, toured and had some of the members embark on solo musical ventures. With promises and teases of a new album in the works, I was eager to see (and hear) this band that do their thing.
I dig their sound. It kind of reminded me Throwing Muses if Throwing Muses were a bit more angsty. A bit rougher around the edges perhaps, but with a familiar approach to catchy melodic lines over fuzzy guitar licks. Some of their set definitely had the punk flavors (faster tempo) that attracted me to their debut album, but I get the impression that they are leaning more alt than punk these days. I’m excited to hear what this band has in store. It’ll be interested to see (and hear) how their music has evolved with their move to the City Of Angels.
