LOS ANGELES, CA- FAARROW is Iman & Siham Hashi are FAARROW, and they were an absolute joy to watch perform at Girlschool. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia and feeling from their native land to escape civil war, these two young women could have easily held a their own Girlschool discussion forum during the weekend to discuss their experience as female refugees (they are United Nations spokespersons with the United Nations Refugee Agency) and to speak of their struggles in expressing their art when to do so is considered a cultural taboo. Rather, we simply had the pleasure of watching them express their hearts through a fusion of pop and hip-hop music.
For me, there’s something important about an artist having a “story”. Something tangible that a listener can reference which allows him/her to not only connect with the music honestly, but also humanizes the artist themselves. FAARROW has a very polished R&B/Hip-Hop sound somewhat akin to Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment’ sister group Chloe X Halle, but while both groups’ music generally have positive vibes throughout, FAARROW’s music simply felt more mature … perhaps even more true … and I want to speculate that that vibe I got comes from the Hashi sisters living more life than 90% of peers their own age. When they incorporated a spirited acoustic cover of The Fugee’s “Ready Or Not” into their set, changing the lyrics to “I’m a refugee from Somalia”, all I could think to myself was, “Damn, this song just got real.”
Their names Iman, meaning “FAITH” and Siham, meaning “ARROW,” gives light to their name, FAARROW. I have faith that these sisters will be shooting high and far like an arrow as FAARROW.
