This collaboration with Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic marks a significant milestone in Lafourcade’s career, and her latest album, released in 2022, is a beautiful ode to themes like heartbreak, death, mourning, and joy. Inspired by the spirit of nature and the energy of Mother Earth, this album radiates a kind of lyrical and musical depth that resonates deeply with listeners. Dudamel himself exuded joy at the collaboration, introducing the night with glowing praise for Lafourcade, describing her not only as an extraordinary artist but as the “voice of Mexico,” an embodiment of Latin American culture and talent. He acknowledged her unparalleled ability to take audiences on a musical journey through Mexico like no other.

The night kicked off with a powerful rendition of John Adams’ “Short Ride in a Fast Machine” by Dudamel and the LA Phil, setting the tone for an immersive evening. The orchestra then delved into spirited performances of Arturo Márquez’s “Danzón No. 9” and Gabriela Ortiz’s “Antrópolis,” two vibrant compositions by acclaimed composers from Mexico City, evoking the city’s iconic dance halls. Then, it was time for Lafourcade to grace the stage. Dressed in a stunning red outfit, she was greeted by an enthusiastic, predominantly Latinx audience, whose warmth and joyful faces reflected their anticipation.

Lafourcade opened with a touching tribute to the late Venezuelan artist Simón Díaz, performing the folk classic “Tonada de la Luna Llena.” As her ethereal vocals filled the air, it was clear that this night was going to be something special. She continued with “Rocío de Todos Los Campos,” a heartfelt song dedicated to her late friend, Mexican modern dancer Rocío Sagaón. Lafourcade then immersed the audience in the lush, emotional landscape of her latest album, performing tracks such as “Llévame Viento,” “Muerte,” “De Todas las Flores,” “Pasan los Días,” “Pajarito Colibrí,” “María la Curandera,” and “El Lugar Correcto.” Between each song, she offered dedications to beloved composers, her eyes brimming with gratitude as she exclaimed, “This night is heavenly. I could die happy after this. Thank God I’m here, and I can do it a second time and a third time tomorrow.” Her words drew even more enthusiastic applause, a testament to the deep connection she shares with her audience.

Lafourcade’s love for music and culture was palpable, as she emphasized the importance of our cultural roots while seamlessly incorporating songs from her previous albums into the setlist. One of the evening’s most stirring moments was when the YOLA choir joined her on stage to perform “Hasta la Raíz” and “Mi Tierra Veracruzana.” The choir’s harmonies elevated the performance to new emotional heights, with many in the audience rising to dance, their spirits lifted by the infectious energy.

The night then transitioned into a lively cumbia segment, with Lafourcade declaring joyfully, “I love cumbias!” As she played “Nunca es Suficiente,” the Hollywood Bowl turned into a sea of movement, with the crowd dancing freely under the stars. Lafourcade took a reflective moment to share, “The power of music is our boss and our teacher. It doesn’t judge anyone; it just unifies us. Music is why I love being here.” Her words resonated like a mantra, echoing the universal language of music that connects us all.

The encore featured Lafourcade’s solo guitar rendition of The Beatles’ “Blackbird,” a song she shared was the first she ever learned to play. The Bowl then filled with the timeless melody of “Cucurrucucú Paloma,” with the audience joining in song, creating a moving communal experience. Closing with “Caminar Bonito” and “Mi Manera de Querer,” she ended the night on a nostalgic note with an a cappella performance of “Cielito Lindo.” It was a poignant, unifying moment, celebrating a song that has become a symbol of Mexican pride and tradition.

The evening at the Hollywood Bowl was not merely a showcase of Lafourcade’s most recent work; it was a testament to her versatility and artistry. Accompanied by Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic, Lafourcade traversed a wide-ranging repertoire that included son jarocho, bossa nova, cumbia, and bolero. This rich fusion of sounds and styles created an experience that honored not only the cultural roots of the music but also the shared memories of the artists, making it an unforgettable night of love, passion, and deep cultural appreciation.
