LOS ANGELES, CA- The MARRIAGETOXIN: Road to the Best Marriage! panel at Anime Expo 2026 proved that surviving lethal hitmen and dodging poison darts may actually be easier than surviving something far more terrifying: the modern dating pool.
For those just discovering the series, MARRIAGETOXIN is animated by BONES Film and based on the Shōnen Jump+ manga written by Joumyaku and illustrated by Mizuki Yoda. The series takes the superpowered-assassin genre, injects it with a heavy dose of romantic-comedy absurdity, and proudly embraces its wonderfully strange premise.
At the center of the story is Hikaru Gero, the deadly heir to the Poison Master Gero Family who has spent virtually his entire life in the underworld. Romance has never exactly been a priority. That changes when his family demands that his younger sister produce an heir to preserve the Poison Master bloodline. Determined to protect her, Gero arrives at an unconventional solution: he will get married instead.
There is only one problem. He has absolutely no idea how.
Enter Mei Kinosaki, the brilliant marriage swindler who happens to be the target of Gero’s latest job. Mei boasts the ability to seduce practically anyone, male or female, in under thirty seconds, making them perhaps the perfect person to coach an elite assassin through the decidedly more dangerous world of dating. Together, the unlikely pair embarks on Gero’s search for a bride, a mission that often feels less like a traditional romantic comedy than a targeted assassination.
The Anime Expo panel offered a personal and frequently hilarious look at the challenge of adapting a story that deliberately refuses to be confined to one genre. Director Motonobu Hori and the creative team discussed balancing the series’ breakneck action with its surprisingly sincere romantic core and unabashed absurdity.
Much of what makes the premise work is the enormous gulf between Gero’s two skill sets. As an assassin, he is frighteningly capable. Put him in a room full of dangerous enemies and he knows exactly what to do. Put him in front of a woman he might actually want to date and suddenly one of the world’s most formidable killers is hopelessly out of his depth.
That contradiction is more than a running joke. It is one of the show’s greatest comedic weapons.
The animation team clearly understands it, leaning into the visual and tonal whiplash between Gero’s cold-blooded professional competence and his catastrophic inexperience with romance. The result allows MARRIAGETOXIN to jump from elaborate action sequences to painfully awkward attempts at courtship without either side of the equation feeling entirely out of place.
The staff also spoke passionately about translating Mizuki Yoda’s artwork to animation, particularly the considerable attention paid to Mei Kinosaki’s character design. As a master of disguise and seduction who can seemingly make almost anyone fall for them, Mei needs a visual presence capable of shifting effortlessly between elegance, comedy and unpredictability.
That fluidity is essential because Mei is much more than Gero’s matchmaking coach. They are the counterweight that makes the entire premise work. Gero may possess the physical skills to survive almost anything, but Mei understands the social world that remains completely foreign to him.
The production’s attention to character design is hardly accidental. BONES Film has previously highlighted character design as one of the central components of bringing MARRIAGETOXIN to animation, with Hori and character designer and chief animation director Kohei Tokuoka discussing the challenge of translating the manga’s personalities and visual appeal to the screen.
Hearing the team discuss that process at Anime Expo also reinforced something important about the series: beneath all of the assassins, superhuman abilities, marriage schemes and escalating insanity, there is genuine affection for these characters.
And then there was Sirius.
The panel’s most memorable moment did not come from a polished production deck or an exclusive trailer. Instead, it arrived when Hori casually pulled out a small, handmade cardboard cutout of Sirius, the hamster partnered with Hamster Master Kimie Arashiyama.
It was ridiculous.
It was adorable.
And somehow, it was completely perfect.
The official series introduces Arashiyama as a Hamster Master, one of the many increasingly unusual specialists Gero encounters as his search for a bride expands, with Sirius serving as her remarkably capable animal partner.
Seeing the director of a major anime production proudly present a handmade cardboard hamster on an Anime Expo stage communicated something no meticulously prepared corporate presentation could have accomplished quite as effectively. It felt sincere.
That little piece of cardboard became an unexpectedly perfect representation of the production itself.
MARRIAGETOXIN works because it commits wholeheartedly to its contradictions. It can be stylish and ridiculous, violent and romantic, absurd and unexpectedly sincere, sometimes within the same scene. Its protagonist can eliminate professional killers without breaking a sweat while requiring professional assistance to navigate a date.
And apparently, its director can oversee a BONES Film anime production while still finding time to make his own cardboard Sirius.
If the enthusiasm on display at Anime Expo 2026 is any indication, the people bringing MARRIAGETOXIN to life understand exactly what kind of wonderfully chaotic story they have on their hands.
Finding the perfect match may be the most difficult mission Hikaru Gero has ever accepted.
Fortunately, he has Mei Kinosaki helping him.
And somewhere nearby, there is probably a hamster.
