AUSTIN, TX- Since starting as Austin Psych Fest in 2008, the Levitation Festival has continued as a full weekend event across multiple venues in downtown Austin from 2015 onwards, the name culled from the city’s psychedelic rock pioneers, the 13th Floor Elevators (specifically, “I’ve Got Levitation” from 1967’s ‘Easter Everywhere’).
Some of the heavy hitters in the lineup for LEVITATION 2021 were Yves Tumor, The Hives, Thundercat, Japanese Breakfast, The Black Angels, Black Midi, A Place To Bury Strangers, Drab Majesty, Chicano Batman amongst others.
The prior LEVITATION events in Paris, Chicago, and Vancouver have had a thematic and musical connection to the original Austin festival, year after year. LEVITATION has been remarkably diverse, a genuine challenge given the recent travel restrictions international artists have been subject to. With queer artists, female performers, and sets that appealed to a range of different audiences, LEVITATION felt like a place where individuals of different backgrounds could fit in without trying too hard. Varied genres and audience in what felt like an honestly artful set of spaces, all filled with their well-known multicolor dreamlike lighting designed by Mad Alchemy.
The ongoing format of utilizing mostly Red River venues continued and boosted sales and traffic among the 7 clubs involved. Whether or not they’ll continue doing it this way, it feels more inclusive and supportive of that neighborhood’s venues than any other festival, save for the idealized notion of SXSW.
