Check Out Photos and Found Video of The Hives, Sweet Spirit, Sasami and More at Levitation!
AUSTIN, TX- On our last day of Levitation, we were able to catch some more great bands. Pussy Gillette, a Texas punk trio composed by a female vocalist and bass player Masani Negloria, Guitarist Nathan Calhoun (also band member of We Are The Asteroid), and drums by Brent Prager (member of Cherubs) shredded. The band just released their self-titled album, Pussy Gillette on Calhoun label Bad Rope Records. Sasami, formerly Cherry Glazerr’s synth player, showcased her solo project, a self-titled debut album released by Domino records. New York was well represented with Brooklyn-based The Mystery Lights hypnotizing us with their psychedelic-garage rock.
I was really excited to catch the Austin-based 6 piece band fronted by Sabrina Ellis, Sweet Spirit. Sabrina is also the lead singer of the popular local band, A Giant Dog, and she is an outspoken queer artist who spotlights matters of social justice, gender discrimination, and societal standards. Charismatic glam rock/pop mashup heavy on guitars, glitter, and dancing. Powerful vocals and on-stage complicity amongst the members of the band that don’t seem to take themselves so seriously even though they sound as tight as it can create a welcoming climate to feel silly and connect to deeper emotions at the same time. Trinidad. Their third studio album came out on independent label Merge Records in 2020. They’re a very active and generally heavy touring band that might be coming to a city near you sometime soon.
We wrapped our Levitation experience with the Swedish garage punk band The Hives. They took the stage at The Mohawk and performed a long and energetic set to a very mixed crowd that certainly knew the lyrics, and sang and moshed accordingly. This Halloween evening performance was one of the absolute best sets of the weekend, living up to and exceeding expectations as everyone’s “New Favorite Band”. I’d repeat it a few times.
